אבי מציין בצדק שמי שרוצה לעשות עסקים במדינה רגולטורית כמו ישראל, אין לו ברירה אלא לעשות עסקים עם המדינה. מצדו של איש העסקים אלו הן עסקאות כמו כל עסקה אחרת: הוא מוכר מוצר (למדינה, במקרה זה), ומקבל תמורתו כסף. אבל מה עם הצד השני? הצד השני הוא הפוליטיקאי. המוצר שהוא מקבל נקרא ‘רווח פוליטי’. אבל, להבדיל מרובנו כשאנחנו קונים מוצר כלשהו, הפוליטיקאי לא משלם עבור המוצר בכספו שלו.

In a regulatory state (which is to say almost any state in existence today), if one wants to do business, he has no choice but to do business with the state. From the businessman’s point of view, this is largely business as usual: he sells a product (to the state, in this case), and receives money in return. What about the other side, the politician? He buys political influence, but unlike regular people buying regular products, he pays for it with other people’s money.
