סרט חדש על צ'ה גוורה. A new Che movie

אך ישנם דברים רבים שהצופים לא ילמדו מסרט גדול מימדים זה, שיש בו בעיות גדולות, כמו גם מעלות משמעותיות. בין שתי התקופות המתוארות בסרט "צ'ה", גוורה היה שחקן חשוב בממשלת קסטרו, אך חלקו הברוטלי בהפיכת תנועה מהפכנית לדקטטורה לא מוזכר כלל. זאת, יחד עם משחקו המרגש והכריזמטי של בניסיו דל טורו, מאפשרים למר סודרברג לשמר את הדימוי הרומנטי של גוורה כקדוש מעונה, ודמות נערצת, תומך העניים והנדכאים. אבל דמות זו כבר נראית כנאיבית ולא שלמה, במקרה הטוב, ובמקרה הגרוע, כרגשנית ושקרית. ויותר לעניינינו, אולי, לא ממש מעניינת.

עם כל הכבוד שיש לי לכשרונו של סודרברג כבמאי, אני לא הולכת לשלם עבור צפיה בפרופגנדה שמאלנית, או כל פרופגנדה אחרת, בעצם. וכל הכבוד לכותב הבקורת: אחרי הכל, הוא כותב באחד העתונים היותר שמאלניים בארה"ב.

There is a lot, however, that the audience will not learn from this big movie, which has some big problems as well as major virtues. In between the two periods covered in “Che,” Guevara was an important player in the Castro government, but his brutal role in turning a revolutionary movement into a dictatorship goes virtually unmentioned. This, along with Benicio Del Toro’s soulful and charismatic performance, allows Mr. Soderbergh to preserve the romantic notion of Guevara as a martyr and an iconic figure, an idealistic champion of the poor and oppressed. By now, though, this image seems at best naïve and incomplete, at worst sentimental and dishonest. More to the point, perhaps, it is not very interesting.

Well, this is all I need to know to keep my money – not that I expected any better from a Hollywood director, however talented. And, kudos to A. O. Scott for being honest. It's the NYT, after all.
